Hospitals Go Global: Guangzhou Puts Its Medical Capacity on the Show Floor
At the August 2026 Guangzhou Medical and Health Industry Expo, all 50 of the city's tertiary hospitals took part as "demand-side" participants and filed more than 300 clinical requirements. In October, the 140th Canton Fair opened an International Medical Services Zone for the first time in 70 years, and the GZ Medigo app went live. Guangzhou is translating its medical resources from local service capacity into products it can offer the world.

Two Months, Two Expos
In the second half of 2026, Guangzhou's health system did two things it had never done before.
From 21 to 23 August, the 2026 Guangzhou Medical and Health Industry Expo was held in Hall B of the Canton Fair Complex. Organised by the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government and coordinated by the municipal health commission and the municipal collaboration office, it was the first full-industry-chain medical and health expo in China led by a health administration department.
Two months later, from 15 to 19 October, the 140th Canton Fair opened an International Medical Services Zone for the first time in its 70-year history, and GZ Medigo, Guangdong's first one-stop digital medical travel platform, launched its app on the show floor.
One expo faces upstream industry; the other faces buyers from around the world. Together they say one thing: Guangzhou is translating its medical resources from local service capacity into products it can offer abroad.
The Expo: Hospitals Move from Spectators to Problem-Setters
The most notable change at this year's expo was who was exhibiting.
All 50 tertiary hospitals in the city took part as "demand-side" participants, formally filing more than 300 clinical collaboration requirements across 12 core fields, including AI-assisted imaging diagnostics, rehabilitation robotics, hospital-prepared traditional Chinese medicine formulations and substitutes for high-value consumables. Sun Yat-sen University organised three schools and seven affiliated hospitals to exhibit jointly for the first time, releasing more than 30 frontier commercialisation results on site.
Hospitals no longer come to look at equipment; they come with problems and look for solutions. Behind that shift is Guangzhou's medical base: more than 7,600 healthcare institutions, 50 tertiary hospitals, over 194 million patient visits a year and more than 6,500 biopharmaceutical companies.
What will really shape the next few years, however, is the three platforms launched at the opening ceremony: the founding of the International Medical Services Management Branch of the Guangzhou Hospital Association, the release of the Guangzhou International Medical Cross-Border Payment Platform, and the launch of the Guangzhou International Medical Tourism Platform and its products. Together they cover the whole service chain, from before arrival through the stay to after departure.
The Canton Fair: Putting Medical Travel on the Trade Services Floor
Two months later, that capacity was moved into China's largest trade exhibition.
The International Medical Services Zone at the 140th Canton Fair was organised by the Guangzhou International Medical Travel Service Centre under Lingnan Group, under the theme "Fair2Care". Nearly 30 healthcare industry organisations exhibited jointly, 19 medical institutions appeared as a group, and the zone received more than 5,000 domestic and international buyers in total.
The zone used a two-scenario design, with displays inside the hall and route experiences outside it, and launched a number of premium international medical experience routes covering whole-cycle health management, advanced medical technology and traditional Chinese medicine wellness and rehabilitation. The GZ Medigo app launched at the same time turned exhibition displays into deliverable services: a multilingual interface, online consultation, specialist appointments, foreign-card online payment and direct billing with commercial insurers, with guide accompaniment, interpretation, accommodation, transfer, wellness and insurance claims all turned into traceable products.
Moving from a booth to a platform is a bigger step than it looks. A booth solves being seen; a platform solves being delivered.
Behind the Platforms: The Rules Are Already in Place
The platforms did not appear out of nowhere.
On 26 March 2026, the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, the Provincial Healthcare Security Administration and the Provincial Medical Products Administration jointly published the first list of pilot hospitals for international medical services in Guangdong. Twenty-five hospitals were selected, 23 public and two private, for a pilot period running from 2026 to 2027, and 17 of them are in Guangzhou. Officially, international medical services are aimed at Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, foreign nationals and overseas Chinese who pay out of pocket or hold international commercial insurance. They are not covered by basic medical insurance and are strictly separated from basic medical resources.
On 29 April, the Guangzhou International Medical Travel Service Centre was unveiled, and the municipal health commission issued 12 innovative measures to support international medical services. The Guangzhou International Medical Quality Control Centre and the International Medical Services Management Branch of the Guangzhou Hospital Association were established at the same time. Demand-side data confirms the trend: in 2025 the total number of foreign nationals seeking care in Guangdong rose by more than 20% year on year, with inpatient demand up 76.05%, while Guangzhou received more than 3.2 million inbound foreign visitors.
These figures do not describe a passing trend. They show that demand already exists steadily, and that institutions have begun to absorb it.
Where WhySeek Health Travel Sits in the Chain
The official side has built the one-stop platform and the institutional entry point, but many links outside the hospital remain: visa and itinerary advice, language support, accommodation and dining, cross-border transfer, traditional Chinese medicine culture experiences and city roaming during recovery. These are exactly the parts WhySeek Health Travel can take on.
We complement the official platforms rather than duplicate them: they open the door, and we refine the experience behind it. The direction of demand is already fairly clear. Hong Kong and Macao patients travelling north for care weigh cost-effectiveness and time, Southeast Asian Chinese communities have strong cultural affinity, and Middle Eastern clients show more interest in traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation. These are consistent with the route themes we have planned on our medical travel site.
